Mastering the Bite Window: Flounder Fishing Strategies

This beautiful summer flounder hit my bucktail and made a drag-screaming run. He definitely put my light tackle fishing gear to the test. Summertime flounder fishing in the sounds of Cape May County. , NJ, can be great when you dial into the bite window. A bite window is a period during which fish feed. I have found that this can be as short as 30 minutes of a tide phase.

I limited out on this July trip, it was a few days before the famous King of the Cape Flounder tournament. The largest was 24.5″ and 6.1lbs. I spent 2 hours on the water this trip fishing. The fish were all caught on artificial lures. However, it takes time and instruction to develop good lure presentation, which is a prerequisite to catching fish with artificial lures. Natural baits, presented on a pre-rigged setup, which can be found in local tackle shops, will produce the best results for most anglers.

Many flounder fishermen stay close to the inlets or head offshore this time of year. However, summer flounder can be found deep in the backcountry late in the summer, when the conditions line up. I spent some time this trip seeking out the best water I could find before I wet a line. The water temperature was 67 degrees, and the clarity of the saltwater was a 10, on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the clearest. A day later, at the same spot, the water temperature was 78 degrees, and the water clarity was a 5. Being aware of changing saltwater conditions will significantly improve your catch rate, regardless of the lure or bait applied.https://onthewater.com/find-world-class-summer-flounder-back-bay-waters
