The next generation of outdoorsmen

Uncle Justin and Ty McDermott with two beautiful New Jersey whitetail deer they harvested on the first morning of firearm season.

Ty passed the last hunter safety course offered before the start of the 2025 firearm deer season. Kenny had a last-minute mandatory job assignment and was unable to make the first day. Justin stepped in and set up a tree stand next to his own for Ty’s first hunt. They were hunting in deer zone 34, which includes all of Cape May County, NJ. A challenging area to deer hunt in New Jersey in comparison to Counties to the north. I was hopeful that Ty would at least see some deer on his first hunt of any kind. However, his first hunt turned out to be an epic hunt. Creating a story that will be re-told around our shop woodstove for a lifetime. A big thank you to past generations of NJ hunters and fishermen for buying the land via hunting and fishing license money, and the NJ Fish and Game Council for an outstanding job of managing the funds. https://www.trcp.org/2022/02/17/record-1-5-billion-going-conservation-thanks/

Has New Jersey’s free saltwater angler registry cost NJ?

Yes, implementing a free saltwater fishing registry in New Jersey has likely reduced its share of Sport Fish Restoration (SFR) funds because the federal apportionment formula is based on the number of

How the federal formula works

  • The Sport Fish Restoration Program apportions funds to states based on a formula where 60% is based on the number of licensed anglers and 40% on the state’s geographic size.
  • For a state to be eligible for funds, the angler must possess a license that generates at least $1 in net revenue after costs associated with its issuance.
  • A free registry, by definition, does not generate revenue from individual anglers, so those who are only registered in the free program are not counted toward the state’s license-holder total for the federal formula.

Implications for New Jersey

  • Reduced funding: A free registry leads to a decrease in the number of anglers that are counted for federal apportionment, which directly reduces the amount of SFR funding New Jersey receives.
  • Impact on fish populations: This reduction in funding can negatively impact the state’s ability to fund conservation efforts, habitat restoration, and fisheries management, which are crucial for rebuilding fish populations like weakfish and striped bass.
  • Loss of revenue: The state loses out on potential revenue that could be dedicated to marine and freshwater fisheries programs.

Summer Flounder and White Marlin full Moon

King Nummy Island is in the distance and lit up by the Summer Flounder Full Moon

The Summer Flounder Full Moon that occurs in August is an event from above that signifies the peak of ocean flounder fishing in the southern waters of New Jersey and Delaware. This full moon also heralds the arrival of the White Marlin. According to legend, it was named by King Nummy of the Lenape Indian tribe. King Nummy Island, the burial ground of this revered leader, is bathed in the bright light of the summer flounder moon tonight. As you can see in the photo. I would bet the winning White Marlin of the Ocean City White Marlin Open tournament will be caught this Sunday.https://whitemarlinopen.com. The Flounder Pounder Open is this week. It is the largest flounder tournament in the world. I am sure they scheduled the tournament around the Summer Flounder Full Moon.https://flounderpounderde.com

Mastering the Bite Window: Flounder Fishing Strategies

This beautiful summer flounder hit my bucktail and made a drag-screaming run. He definitely put my light tackle fishing gear to the test. Summertime flounder fishing in the sounds of Cape May County. , NJ, can be great when you dial into the bite window. A bite window is a period during which fish feed. I have found that this can be as short as 30 minutes of a tide phase.

I limited out on this July trip, it was a few days before the famous King of the Cape Flounder tournament. The largest was 24.5″ and 6.1lbs. I spent 2 hours on the water this trip fishing. The fish were all caught on artificial lures. However, it takes time and instruction to develop good lure presentation, which is a prerequisite to catching fish with artificial lures. Natural baits, presented on a pre-rigged setup, which can be found in local tackle shops, will produce the best results for most anglers.

Many flounder fishermen stay close to the inlets or head offshore this time of year. However, summer flounder can be found deep in the backcountry late in the summer, when the conditions line up. I spent some time this trip seeking out the best water I could find before I wet a line. The water temperature was 67 degrees, and the clarity of the saltwater was a 10, on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the clearest. A day later, at the same spot, the water temperature was 78 degrees, and the water clarity was a 5. Being aware of changing saltwater conditions will significantly improve your catch rate, regardless of the lure or bait applied.https://onthewater.com/find-world-class-summer-flounder-back-bay-waters

Weakfish season 2025 in Cape May NJ

Summer flounder Ocean bite 2018

IMG_9119         The summer flounder bite 2018 has been awesome the last few days off of Cape May County,NJ. We caught our 2 man limit in under 2 hours.  The largest was 24″ . Beautiful summer’s day on the water.

Summer weakfish 2018 also known as the game of patience has been good at times. I caught and released this 5 pounder a few days back. I haven’t  seen a  true tide-runner weakfish (8 pounds and up) to date this season.

August back bay flounder fishing is not for those with a short attention span. However , with much effort there is  some nice fish to be caught.   Don’t  try it without high-test  bug spray. The green heads will eat you alive. Really it is  time for offshore  fishing. I caught these fish a few days back. A 25″ sheepshead  and a 23.5 summer flounder.

2018 Spring Weakfish

IMG_3346Really this petty much sums up this springs weakfish action. A scratched up thump is a sure tell sign of a  fabulous weakfish bite..

Well, the weakfish bite has been pretty awesome this spring . However , the true tide runner weakfish ( 8 pounds plus) have been hard to locate this season to date.

The striped bass beach bite has been excellent for the guys fishing the night tides. Numorus 40″ stripers have been caught along with a good number of black drum  . I have had some respectable  size stripers while targeting weakfish as well.

The Summer flounder  action is also looking good.

Today’s trophy class Cape May Stripers

Captain CJ Polhamus is zeroed in on trophy size Striped Bass right here in Cape May County, NJ.. Striped bass fishing in Cape May is far from it’s peak. Most fishermen and charter fishing operations have moved north due to tough fishing conditions. However, those with patience coupled with a good skill set can still catch trophy class striped bass from Cape May waters.  His crew limited out today.  Including Ed Teise who  boated  40 pound plus bass on light spinning gear.
