One day in November 2008 I was on my way home in my skiff . The sky was blue with big, cumulus clouds and the water looked tropical. The air was cool with the smell of fall. I had left my dock at 2:00 AM to hunt SPECKLED sea trout. Armed with over four generations of local fishing knowledge and a passion for fishing that has cost me, well a few friends. I knew it was a tall order to catch a speck for Elise’s special recipe. To catch a speckled trout in Cape May County, NJ a multitude of conditions most converge. Water temperature, wind direction, wind speed , water clarity , salinity level and noise level, i.e., wave runners, cigarette boats, and other fisherman…. This morning I felt good . All conditions were falling in line. I just need one thing, luck! When I had finished tying the boat up. I was staring at two speckled trout . I had a great fishing trip and Elise had her fresh speckled trout. I also returned with something more! I had a realization, If I had choice to live any where on this planet , I would pick my home right here in Cape May county NJ. I love it here Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall!
Good Job, Ken. It looks a lot better there than here right now.
Dan, cool area, as far as you can see blue skys and clean shallow water flats. That I am sure hold some great fishing. You really need to know the waters to fish right due to the rocks mixed with shallow water.
Hello Ken,
I’m very interested in catching Weakfish. I live near Buffalo, NY, We have fantastic Small and Largemouth Bass, Walleye, and various Trout and Salmon fishing here but I haven’t fished saltwater in years and though I’ve caught many species I’ve never gotten Sea Trout. I’m 51 and I’ve been disabled for 30 years. I use a power wheelchair. Do or any other providers charter for Weakfish? Maybe you know of any chair-friendly areas, shorelines piers etc.where nice size ones are caught? Any info. would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Angelo
Angelo, the grassy sound fishing pier, located at the Grassy sound marina, on old North wildwood Blvd. is an excellent spot to catch weakfish, it also has good access. The first ten days in June are historically the best time to catch weakfish in Cape May County, NJ . I will keep you updated on the weakfish bite this spring. I will also check the access at a couple of other spots and get back to you.
Best.
Ken
Note: the fish in this post are New Jersey speckled trout not weakfish, they are two different species.
