Sodium Big Fish Classic 2026
We will scout extensively. Push ourselves out of the comfort zone. Then form a game plan for tournament day. The Tournament fishing area is 2 hours south of Cape May via a Spirit Airlines flight. This definitely is an added challenge. Wind direction, water temperature, water clarity, tides, and fishing pressure all need to be considered. These conditions are in constant flux. The early scout trips just add to our arsenal of where the fish hold during certain combinations of conditions. We try to create a situation where luck can find us. One thing is for sure, we will enjoy the tournament and the great outdoors and create memories. It is a win-win, even if we don’t catch a fish. Memories truly are more valuable than gold and silver.
Action during the Sodium Big Fish Classic Tournament
Grab the net its a big one! Sure enough, Justin landed the largest speckled trout we had caught all day. We need some luck, but it makes the cut for a weighable tournament fish. The next challenge is keeping the fish alive during the ride to the scale, a tournament requirement. They weigh the fish, then place them in large livewell tanks. Then, after the weigh-in is complete, the fish are released back to the local waters. Justin McDermott’s spec made the leaderboard! An accomplishment in itself.
Good luck, Ken. A great area to fish. Last time I was in the area the water temperature this time of year was 46! I was at Spring Warrior Camp, Taylor County north of where you will be. Lock jaw set in and the few fish that did cooperate were up in the creeks. Another time in the summer it was HOT!! Sort of lock jaw problem until I tossed some rainbow trout colored slugos onto the little sand patches in the grass. Then wish I had another bag. My local buddy, Larry, hadn’t seen them. You might want to take some with you. Hope you get some reds while you are there.
I will grab some, thank you. During the last trip, the temperature dropped into the low fifties, and it really slowed the bite. But by midday, we found a few. The trips alone break this cold winter up a little thats for sure.
