Saltwater Tournament fishing , the Wildwood Challenge

Bill Collins has won the Beach and boat tournament's Wildwood Challenge 2 years strait.

Bill Collins has won the Beach and boat tournament’s Wildwood Challenge (Weakfish) 2 years strait. This year’s fish weighed in at 6.8 pounds

The entire seawall was alive with flashlights and headlamps. With every cast of my lure, I would notice a new fisherman, searching out a place to fish. I have been avidly fishing in Cape May County, NJ all of my life. Maybe, I would bump into one or two other fishermen during a night fishing trip. Why such an increase in fishing activity ? This weekend was the Beach and Boat fishing tournament’s Wildwood Challenge. Fishermen traveled in from all over to fish the tournament. The tournament activity also created interest, that inspired people to fish, that weren’t even in the tournament. I caught some beautiful weakfish during the tournament. However they were all short of Bill’s 6.8 tide-runner. The State wide Beach and Boat tournament is still alive until November 30. They have over 10,000 fishermen in the tournament. If you haven’t entered, do yourself a favor, and sign up. It is super cheap, high in value and a lot of fun.

The weakfish was stalking the edge of the sod bank, when I spotted the purple hues. It wasn’t long before my shadow spooked her. The tide-runner weakfish turned and dropped out of sight. It was so refreshing to see the weakfish in such a natural state. About twenty cast later, a weakfish hit, peeled some drag, razed to the top and dropped the hook. The scouting trip was a success. The water clarity, water temperature and wind direction were all good. However, I didn’t see any bait that would hold the fish in the area. Heading back out on the top of the tide, to continue the hunt.

Summer Flounder and weakfish

Sure enough, the weather calmed down and the fishing is picking up. Chip Gruff caught 26 summer flounder, with 4 keepers. He Just missed a limit trip, a nice one was lost at  boat side. I was out just for a short trip and picked up 3 keeper summer flounder to 23″.  The fishing should be good this week for, summer flounder, Black Drum, weakfish , Mako shark and maybe tuna. Excellent time to use some vacation or sick days.   IMG_1268

Weakfish and Summer Flounder

Bill found the lure they wanted. He was the only one to catch, yesterday evening.

Bill found the lure they wanted. He was the only one to catch, yesterday evening.

The weakfish and summer flounder bite slowly picked up, after the endless windy weather. It is still a hunt to find the fish. Even after the fish are located they are very selective. I have one spot that I use as an indicator for summer flounder, in this one area. Water temperature , clarity, all of the conditions were good. Yet, I had to hit them over the head with the jig before they would move. I was just about ready to move on, when a 22″er grabbed the lure. The weakfish were just as tough, holding out for the old school mirror lure. Severn weakfish were caught in the spot I was fishing. Including a gigantic tide-runner weakfish that Bill Collins lost during the landing. The fish was well over thirty inches long. An easy 11 pound fish. The good news is, he is still  alive. I have caught , tagged and released  a few weakfish over the years. I have found that they are usually recaught in the general area.  During the same season. My money is on Bill.

The first 10 days of June

Skipping school,Vacation days, sick time, whatever it took. I always made” time for fishing the first ten days of June. The Drumfish, Weakfish,Summer Flounder and Mako shark bite is usually the best of the year, hold for the weather. This year the weather, wind, rain and cold, have taken the first three days, so far. Hopefully by the weekend it will calm down. Today, time is better spent elsewhere.

Weakfish bite , to spite poor conditions

I reached down to grab big Mikes weakfish, one of a few he had caught in a very short time. This one would place him in the number one spot in Moran’s weakfish tournament (7.85?).My phone battery had died, leaving me unable to take a picture. Over the next few days the condition have continued to decline. However, some nice weakfish have been caught. Including CJ’s 7.7 pound tide-runner weakfish above. The challenge has been locating clear water and the correct water temperature. Marginal, is the best you can expect to find.

Today some nice weakfish were caught. Mark moved into first place in Moran’s spring weakfish tournament. CJ took over second place. Mark is also high hook , so far. This is the first day of summer flounder season. However, the weakfish still have the full attention of many local fishermen. I may update this post later today, with flounder information.

Weakfish !

Ed Teise was targeting weakfish (understatement) when he caught this tide-runner. Ed scheduled this week for vacation, to hunt for weakfish. He put it all together, water temperature, tide, spot, ect.. The last piece of the puzzle was the lure. Most of the time, he only needs 2% of the lures in his tackle bag. Not tonight.. Ed could see that the weakfish were not interested in his lure. He reached around his tackle bag, for a lure he seldom uses, and sure enough. There is a locale weakfish tournament running, so the lure ? The weakie hasn’t been weighed in yet. My guess is 8 pounds plus.

Covered in Bluefish and summer flounder

I spent this morning scouting for weakfish. I found the water temperature in key locations to be marginal at best, 57 degrees. I found 60 degree water on the out going, but the area was covered in 3 pound bluefish and summer flounder. The water temperature needs to hold at 59 degrees for three consecutive days, to get the weakfish bite going. This includes incoming ocean water.
