Kensdock Report: Red Hot

The flounder fishing has improved in the back bays over the past few days, with a few fishermen catching  their limit . However, without question the best flounder fishing this year can be found at the reef sites, with site 11 and the old grounds being the best. Cape May County charter boats returned this last week with impressive  limit catches (40 keepers to 10 pounds).   Grassy Sound Marina flounder tournament is Saturday 14, 2012, this is Cape May County’s number one back bay fishing tournament… The offshore tuna bite here in Cape May County, NJ  is the best in years. The last couple of days yellowfin, bluefin and white Marlin have been caught in great numbers from the inshore lumps and the cannons . Now is the time to burn the fuel or call a Cape May County Charter fishing captain, the fishing is red hot…

Kensdock flounder fishing report: Stay home

Here is June 2012 flounder fishing report, worst June  flounder fishing in my lifetime….  My Son and I did have one limit day, on Memorial weekend. At this point, most fishermen are catching zero keeper flounder and maybe two shorts after an entire day of flounder fishing.

Kensdock Report: MID WINTER UPDATE

Mid winter update: The 2012 NJ flounder season will be liberalized via a longer season, shorter keeper size or a combination of the two. The reason, NJ fishermen underfished the 2011 flounder quota. I am not surprised at all, considering NJ only had about 250,000 saltwater anglers register in 2011, 2011 was the first year for the saltwater fishermen registry in NJ. In the past NOAA would estimate the amount of NJ saltwater fishermen, 1.35 million NJ fishermen at one point, an astronomical over estimation. No need to consult a math professor to reason that New Jersey is owed a substantial increase in the 2012 flounder season quota.

Striper fishermen can no longer use the American eel for bait. It has been added to the federal list of threatened species, along with a federal fine for taking or injuring an American eel (Pending).  Herring a favorite bait among Striper fishermen and early season flounder fishermen will no longer be available for bait, as herring seasons have been closed in all waters.

The NJ 2011 deer season harvest was up in the north, down in central and in the south. In Princeton Twp hunters killed 171 deer, this however was not enough. Princeton  hired White Buffalo Inc.  to cull deer on some  private and county property that is to densely populated for hunting. Some of the deer are literally feeding under swing sets in back yards.  .223 cal. rifles with suppressors will be used from elevated stands.  Some net and bolt will be used in areas where firearms cannot be used. Remember, at one time Princeton Twp. NJ was one of the only towns in the nation that did not” allow deer hunting.  After realizing the ramifications of an out of control deer herd, they now proactively seek to keep the deer herd within the carrying capacity of the habitat.

Deer hunters in NJ are permitted 6 antlered deer, a combination of all seasons fall archery, muzzle loader, shot gun and winter bow. However, only 4 deer hunters out of about 100,000 harvested all 6 antlered deer.

NewJerseyfish and wildlife’s pheasant farm was damaged during Hurricane Irene, thousands of pheasants flew the coup during the storm. NJ fish and wildlife reached out toMarylandfor pheasants {at a cost} for their obligation to pheasant stamp holders.   F&W is seeking a FEMA grant that will help pay for the pheasants and rebuilding the farm.

NJ Deer Check stations are now a thing of the past; hunters must now report their deer via phone or internet. You will receive a number that must be attached to the deer through all processing.

Kensdock report: stripers and specs

Beautiful fall day, toped off with 17 stripers and one spec..  However, it looks like the speckled trout are not going to show in any numbers again this year. Only about 10 specs total have been caught to date, this season.George S.Cape MayCounty’s top spec fisherman has not caught a spec yet this year. He is concerned with the spec population. George has averaged between 50-100Cape May County speckled sea trout per season, over the years. A few years back specs were caught into January, due to unusual warm weather. This may have been the kiss of death for the New Jersey population, as the weather turned extremely cold fast that January. The cold could have killed a large percentage of the spec population, due to the fact they did not have enough time to migrate to warmer waters. Spec fishing in Cape  May County has not been the same since that year. There is something special about catching a New Jersey spec. I can catch a boat load of Florida specs, but it is not the same as catching just one, New Jersey spec.

Kensdock report: August Back Bay Flounder

Jonathon and Wayne traveled in from Louisville Ky., arriving last week. Back bay fishing for founder was on the top of the to do list. Usually they schedule a June Cape May County vacation, to catch the best of the Back  Bay flounder bite. However, this year Jon was  in Hollywood CA., busy with his part in the upcoming movie {Me Again} during June. He has a significant part in the movie, it is going to be a blockbuster, look for the trailers around the New Year. If you are Back Bay Flounder fishing in August, keeper flounder are much tougher to catch apposed to June fishing. The total amount of keeper flounder Jonathon and Wayne boated during their August vacation was 14 keepers to 23”, in addition, they had numerous short flounder. We fished an average of two hours, centered on the top of the tide, five trips. The water temperature fluctuated during the week between 63 degrees to a high of 76 degrees. The water clarity was excellent {tropical} I could see my lure on the bottom, from the boat at 19’.  I will be keeping a snorkel onboard for the rest of the summer to take advantage of the super clear water.  I should mention that every flounder trip this week included keeper flounder, not bad for August back bay fishing.

Kensdock Report: November fishing update, specs, stripers, RFA

2010 New Jersey speckled sea trout
NOnamementioned  is top hook in Cape may co.NJ  with eight speckled sea trout. This is a sad, considering Ed has caught  75 + NJ  specs many seasons in the past.  The spec fishing has been extremely tough, with only fisherman with extensive local knowledge, big game hunter patients and luck have caught. The specs have quickly gone the way of the weakfish. Why have specs declined to this point in NJ? Myself and a few other concerned fishermen attended a NJ marine fisheries council meeting, we spoke with head biologist Tom McCloy about the NJ speckled sea trout. His answer in a nut shell, Nj fish and game does not have the money to do the nessaccary studies to declare an interest in the speckled sea trout with the feds. This leaves the NJ speckled sea trout population exposed to unlimited commercial fishing. This is one of many reasons that many sportfishing groups including the 100,000 member NJ federation of sportsmen,  Cape May County Party boat ass., and many other true recreational fishing groups are pushing for a NJ saltwater license. However, the so called Recreational fishing alliance opposes a NJ saltwater license. I debated at length the NJ saltwater license issue with Jim Hutchinson jr managing director of the RFA on the Bass Barn site, a poll was taken after the debate on the 24,000 member site, they favored a NJ saltwater license 2-1!  Consider the following, the RFA` would not support a moratorium on commercial fishing for weakfish, to spite the fact the weakfish stock is in a dangerously depleted condition. The RFA~ would not support a cites listing for bluefin tuna! A cites listing would have cut off the cash of the Japanese bluefin tuna  buyers worldwide { they have paid 100,000 dollars for one bluefin tuna} putting unsustainable pressure on the bluefin tuna stock worldwide. A cites listing would have  left the domestic markets open for bluefin. I should mention a cites listing for bluefin tuna would not have changed the recreational bag limit one iota. The RFA`will not support a saltwater license knowing NJ  fish and wildlife does not have the funds to manage our fish stocks or enforce New Jerseys fishing regulations. New Jersey has  9 million residents and the forth largest commercial fishing take in the United States and NJ only has NINE” marine conservation officers.   Striper fishing has been excellent in the Delaware Bay with 50 pound class fish being caught every fishable tide. However the beach fishing has been the slowest in years. Keeper bass are being caught but the big schools of stripers have not shown up not on the beach or offshore. Resident short striped bass are being caught in the back bay with a few keepers being taken from the toll bridges at night.

Kensdock Report: Quick up date flounder/striper/offshore

Some nice keeper flounder have been caught in the back bay over the last few days. Ed Teise and Harold had 5 keepers on the last trip. I had one keeper on a short 30 minute trip. A few Kids on a rental boat had two keeper flounder yesterday. The fishermen that put the effort in {on the water at daybreak} are enjoying a good summertime striper bite. At sunset the striper bite has been slow. The best offshore flounder fishermen I know Jowl from Stone Harbor had 3 keeper flounder from the old grounds. Not good. This time of year he usually has his limit of big flounder. Most fishermen have been returning from offshore with nothing in the box. Hopefully it will pick up before the end of the season.  For those that fish smart {get a Roffer’s report and go the distance} the offshore bite has been good.

Kensdock Report: Back bay flounder/ striper/ weakfish update

Dr.Gary on the double touch out of Stone Harbor marina continues to catch keeper flounder in the back bay.On Saturday he put five  5 keepers in the box. Dr. Gary is one of the top back bay flounder fisherman in NJ, if not the best in the State. He has caught numerous flounder over ten pounds in the back bay. His boat recently won the Grassy sound flounder tournament with a 6 pound plus flounder. Lucky for the winners of the duke of fluke tournament he was not entered or he would have taken the heaviest flounder in that tournament also. The water temperature has been fluctuating from 59 degrees to 80 degrees in the back bay depending on the wind direction. When the water temperature dips the striper bite turns red hot. There has also been some weakfish caught and released this week, one 22″ that was caught and released and a six pounder that was put in the cooler.

Kensdock report: Back bay flounder update

I was out yesterday for a  short time flounder fishing in the back bay.The first spot I stopped at the short flounder were staked up. A gentleman and his two sons had been fishing the spot for two hours  they had 34 throw backs and two nice keepers. I moved on to a summertime favorite flounder hole. This spot was loaded with flounder, also mostly shorts but I know with time spent one could catch a few keepers at this spot. I moved on to the next summertime spot this spot is out in the inlet, same way  loaded with flounder. What I found at the end of my 45 minute scouting trip was the fact the bottom of the back bay is covered in flounder. You should expect to catch at least a few keepers a tide. With the tide cycling around it will make it possible to avoid the heat by fishing the morning and evening tide. The water temperature was 65 degrees at the top of the tide. The water clarity was a 7. Fishing pressure was a 1 with 10 being  the busiest.

Kensdock report: Bass barn/Rfa

The Rfa is begging for money to finance their sea bass law suit. They are bashing large marine manufactures and other related business on the Bass Barn for not sending them money. In a nut shell, the  RFA  claims the  science and data that the NMFS used to set the sea bass season is flawed, there for the recreational and commercial seas bass harvest should be increased. They continue to push for short term financial gain for a few, in complete disregard of the future of recreational fishermen, commercial fishermen ,marine manufacturing industry and the sea bass.
I think the reason that no major manufactures or larger and better financed recreational fishing organizations have joined the RFA lawsuit is due to this court decision http://www.joincca.org/press%20releases/2008/Rule_of_science.html
