Kensdock Report: Striper bite red hot

The striper bite is red hot in the Delaware Bay. Boats from Cape May NJ are catching in the area of  Number 1 buoy, just outside of the Maurice river. All the sharps are limiting out easily. Clam is the bait most are using followed by blood worms. What I use for bait for stripers this time of year is live herring. Hands down the best striper bait. A few keeper bass have been caught from reeds beach and higbees beach. I do not know of any keepers being caught from Stone Harbor or Avalon beach front. I saw a few commercial crabbers today in the back bay putting out their gear for blue claws. They will load up the back bay areas with pots from now until memorial day. Most crabbers move all their gear to the Delaware Bay once the water warms up and the crowds show up. Some tog have been caught the last couple of days around the Ocean drive bridges with one tog hitting six pounds on the scale. I have not put my boat in the water yet due to the fact I have an unusual amount of work to do around my property due to the winter storms. There should be a few tide runner weakfish around the back bay areas of Cape May co.. With this record warm sunny weather the first weakfish should be caught soon. The weakfish population is severely depleted, however  if you apply  effort with local knowledge  you still have a chance at a tide runner weakie. The best news I heard on weakfish was from the upper Delaware Bay late last summer, I had very reliable reports of a few fishermen limiting out every trip. I also had solid information from the Barnegat bay with reports of limit catches last summer.. The Barnegat Bay had a  large school of weakfish rooming around last August. I found this information as great news! Due to the fact that  some traditional weakfish spots are completely void of any weakies. Hopefully the new weakfish regulations will help. Recreational fishermen have a one weakfish bag limit per day with a 13″ keeper size. Commercial is 100 pounds per trip 13″.We always have a good run of spike weakfish in the ocean in  the fall yet they never return in the spring. Hopefully the 100 pound per trip commercial limit will save a  few of the fall spike weakfish. I am betting if given a chance the spike weakfish will return in the spring.

Take a second and vote on the options@

I will hand deliver the results to the NJ marine fisheries council. I can assure you the council members will take the results into consideration. Last year the option that was approved by the council was the same option that won approval on the poll.

If at all possible attend the NJ marine fisheries meeting. The March 4, 2010 meeting will be held in the L. Manuel Hirshblond Room, Toms River Township Office, 33 Washington Street, Toms River, NJ 08753.

I’m all for conservation and there is a big problem with several fisheries, but I just don’t trust him.

If CaptTB or some of the other guys started a similar post… Ok. But not from Kensdock…

GoNavy, Obviously you do not know me. Nothing could be further from the truth! I have caught more fish and killed more deer legally under fair chase than most people on the planet! I spent enough time to catch over one hundred keeper flounder last season and catch one of three specs caught in Cape may co.. I have won a few and participated in many fishing tournaments both big game and back bay tournaments like lucky bones flounder. My family has been involved in hunting , commercial fishing, recreational fishing for 5 generations in Cape May co. NJ and continue to be avidly involved today. I am long time personal friends to some of the biggest players in the commercial fishing industry today.Due to my back ground I am able to post information that some people do not want posted on this site and others. I am all for utilizing our natural recourse via harvesting sustainable numbers of fish and game. I am not for abusing our natural resources via over harvest and repeating the same mistakes of the past. I look forward to meeting with Governor elect Chris Christie’s staff to discuss the benefits of a saltwater license. I do not get a dime for writing these post or lobbing our legislators. I do it because I love to catch fish and I know exactly what most be done to dramatically improve our saltwater fishing in New Jersey.

This is a big problem” and the root of many bad decisions concerning NJ recreational fishing:

Capt.TB Quote:
So, what would a business man want? $14 or $19 going to the state with $1.00 going to the store owner, or potentially $15 or $20 more dollars going to them (or even a fraction of that let’s say 4 or 5 dollars) going to the store while the PEOPLE ARE IN THERE ANYWAY IN ORDER TO GET THEIR LICENSE….or $1.00 going to the store.

.A few businessmen  think short term and would rather have a chance” of grabbing your twenty dollars today in lieu of you investing in the future of your salt water fishing. In complete disregard to the fact that the better the fishing the more sales he will have in the future.  Many of them also have resisted a NJ salt water license out fear the true numbers of anglers and fish being caught will be found out and may” shorten the opportunity for them to grab your money. Many business really do not care  what shape the fish populations are in , they only need to sell you on the possibility” of catching a fish no mater how remote that possibility may be.

Please note: There are many charter Captains like Cape May Ray that see the benefits to his business a salt water license would bring. They also are concerned with actual catching fish for their customers.

Bill S2984 will keep NJ in step with its reputation for investing in short term economic solutions. It will not provide the smart investment in the future of salt water fishing that a salt water license will provide.

New Jersey has between   800,000- 1.4 million NJ anglers depending on the year. That would generate about 40 million annually. New Jersey Anglers have lost  about 100 million dollars of their far share of Federal excise tax funds due to the fact that New Jersey lacks a salt water license. Just this last year we lost millions of dollars in  stimulus money and all the benefits to salt water fishing that went with it.  Please take a look at states like Florida,SC and others that have had a Salt water fishing license in place for a minute. You will find excellent fishing and economic benefits that you will not find in NJ!!  Why, because they have invested wisely in their recreation fishing resource via a salt water license. I am not surprised that the recreational fishing alliance {RFA}is opposed to a New Jersey salt water license as they always go for short term economic gain. It is time for New Jersey Anglers to invest in the future by supporting a salt water license. As the polls indicate NJ anglers would not mind kicking in a few dollars to improve their salt water fishing. Please take a look at the poll results from today 12-02-09 and the extract from the Newark Star-Ledger article.

Whether fighting no-fishing zones, keeping white marlin off the endangered-species list or elbowing commercial fishermen out of favored waters, the Recreational Fishing Alliance makes its voice heard.

The New Jersey-based RFA, which has chapters in all coastal states, bills itself as a “grassroots political action organization representing individual sport fishermen and the sport-fishing industry.” It frequently touts its tens of thousands of members in brochures and press releases.

But according to two recent lawsuits against its executive director, there’s only one member that really matters. The suits say that New Gretna-based Viking Yacht Co., one of the nation’s premier luxury yacht manufacturers, tightly controls the non-profit, tax-exempt RFA, and the two operate as a “single integrated enterprise.”

Fishing advocates and environmentalists said they have long believed as much, maintaining that the RFA cares more about Viking’s interests than those of the fishermen it claims to represent.

“There’s a big difference between what they do and what we do,” said Al Marantz, a founding member of the all-volunteer Jersey Coast Anglers Association, with a membership of about 30,000. “Decisions can be made by (Viking CEO) Bob Healey himself and not really correspond to the wishes of the fishermen.”

I have been banned from the Bass Barn for not agreeing with Moderator CaptJoe and other backers of the law suit to be filed by the Recreational fishing alliance against the ASMFC. The law suit reeks of greed and indifference to the future generation of sportfishermen. They have the audacity to ask sportfishermen to fund their law suit! They have been using half truths and innuendos in an attempt to exploit the sea bass stock for SHORT TERM economic benefit.

back bay 205If you heard someone hollering about 1:00 this afternoon it was me. I reached into a bushel to pick up a blue claw crab with tongs, some how the blue claw caught me by the finger with his claw and crunched it  until it bleed. The bite has been located at the inshore ocean structure. Trigger fish, flounder and seabass. The weather has been excellent for ocean fishing the last few days. Jon L. was at the Cape May reef he limited out on flounder and was looking forward to eating trigger fish tonight. Just outside of the inlet the water visibility was excellent about 18ft.. The water temperature at my dock is 81 degrees.

Kensdock fishing report 8-2-09 Help the weakfish

speckled-trout-013I have been called over the top, crazy, and more by many people that do not share the passion for salt water fishing that I possess for it and other activates in life. Here are a few examples: I was called crazy last December for taking my skiff for a 5 mile ride at 2:00 am in a 30 kt. NW wind,10 degree wind chill  and no  compass. Crazy was replaced with wow when I returned to my dock with a cooler full of speckled trout. I was called nuts for talking a friend into flying me to Florida in his jet for fresh ballyhoo hours before the mid Atlantic. When Governor Florio tried to dismantle the fish and game council I use the same over the top, crazy whatever attitude to start a grass roots letter writing campaign that started in Cape May County and spread through the State of New Jersey all the way to High point in Sussex County, NJ. The thousands of individually written letters helped I am sure to change the Governors mind. I used the same crazy. Nuts, attitude to personally call over a thousand people to urge them to attend the federal fish and wildlife meeting in Cape May county co… So many of our people showed they over flowed into the parking lot. The meeting went our way to say the lest. I also started a grass roots letter writing campaign to keep the land open to hunting and salt water fishing. When the manager made the decision  to keep the land open to hunting he reported that 98% of the letters he received were in favor of keeping the land open to hunting, this was reported in the Atlantic City press. When the Cape May county park purchased hundreds of acres of traditional hunting land and decided to post no trespassing signs on the land. I used the same attitude to start up the grass roots machine to urge all cape may co. hunters to attend the Cape May co. Freeholders meeting. When Ruth fisher took the podium she asked if there was a sale on flannel shirts! The meeting turned out a record crowd that I think still stands today. The freeholders reopened the traditional land to hunting.

Being over the top, crazy, nuts about a cause or activity   is synonymous with being passionate. Being passionate about what you are involved in brings success.

The kind of push that it is required to bring the weakfish back has not been applied!  The kind of campaign were every salt water angler on the east coast makes a phone call, writes a letter,  sends a comment via email  to  a Congressman, Senator, Assemblymen, Governor and the ASMFC. We need letters in every News paper on the entire east coast to let all the people know about the poor condition of the weakfish. Only with this kind effort will the weakfish return to your favorite spot .

                                                                                                      Make it happen,

I received an email from Nichola Meserve fisheries management plan coordinator for ASMFC. She will continue to accept comments for the August 19 weakfish meeting. The comments will be printed and hand delivered from this time forward.
Send your comment today. Remember there will be people at the meeting urging the ASMFC to continue to allow commercial and recreational fishing regardless of the fact that the weakfish are inches away from the endangered species list.

Today was filled with rain, thunder storms and downed trees. The water temperature was 67 degrees. I spoke with Bruce today, he said  he has limited out on flounder in all but one trip. Bruce is an oldgrounds, Reef, ocean flounder sharp. He has made five trips so far this year. He likes to fish tight to the structure and expects to loose 8 to 10 rigs a trip. If you are planning a flounder trip in the back bay plan on not catching any  fish to bring home.
