Striped Bass and Oceanic Bluefish bite continues

The eddy was swing my lure directly along a known weakfish hideout.Sure enough, as my lure passed by, I got a solid strike. As my drag screamed, I am thinking, 11 LBS tide-runner. However, it turned out to be a 28″ striped bass, that was fighting like a weakie. Ed followed up with a nice striper. The striped bass and monster bluefish must have spooked the tide runner weakfish, out of the area. The tide-runner weakfish hunt will continue on the next tide.

The first weakfish to show, we call scouts. They push ahead of the main body of fish. They offer excellent clues, to where the best spring weakfish bite will occur.

A beautiful spring Saturday at the shore, with plenty of big fish.

Kara and her Dad Jeff took full advantage of the day. Kara is now a college student with limited time to fish. Jeff did a fabulous job of zeroing in on the fish before their trip. This allowed for an excellent catch. They caught 19 Oceanic big bluefish, from the tranquil, lake like waters of the back bay. They were throwing poppers and bucktails.

Jake Ruczynski located some big summer flounder in the back bay. He was fishing from his Kayak and using a pink zoom. A true sportsman !

Lynette Polhamus and her husband CJ have owned many beautiful offshore sportfishing boats. However, today she caught her personal best bluefish, from land. She was using a hand-made popper and light spinning gear.
The bluefish action in Cape May is providing some world-class light tackle action.
Fly fisherman Jack had to break out the spinning rod for these monster blues.

New Jersey 2015 Striped Bass regulations in effect

One of today's striped bass, at the end of the fight.
New regulations are in effect for striped bass: one fish 28″ to less than
43″ AND one fish 43″ or greater. The Striped Bass Bonus Program (SBBP)
closed on May 1 and will remain closed until September 1, 2015. When it
reopens on September 1, the SBBP regulations will be one fish 24″ to less
than 28″. The order of fish harvested does not matter.

In addition, no person may take, attempt to take, or have in possession
any striped bass from the following closed waters:
January 1 – February 28: All waters closed except the Atlantic Ocean from
zero to three miles offshore.
April 1 – May 31: Delaware River and Bay and their tributaries closed
from the upstream side of the Calhoun Street Bridge downstream to and
including the Salem River and its tributaries.

Big Bluefish bite continues in the Cape May sounds

Bluefish up to 18 LBS have been caught in the surf and back bays. It does not happen very often (understatement) that bluefish of this caliber, set up in the back bays . This is an excellent opportunity for light tackle and fly fishermen, to test the limits of their gear and skill.

Weakfish, none yet. The wind has been SW, this direction makes it difficult for the water temperature to heat up, regardless of the air temperature. I had 56 degrees at my dock at low tide today. We need 3 days of 59 degree water temperature or better, to get the weakfish bite started. There has been some big stripers caught up in the Delaware bay. It is about time they begin to drop down into Cape May County waters.

Cj Polhamus shows his 12 pound slammer blue that he caught on light tackle today. CJ was a winner in the 2014 Fishermen Magazine coast-wide tournament (weakfish). He was scouting for weakfish when the big bluefish showed. He said, there was no bird play, but you could smell the bluefish. Striped Bass, big flounder and even black drum from the beach have been caught this week. However, they have all been caught by the super sharp.

There is a pretty good Striped Bass bite going on. At least for the skill sharp fishermen. All of the stripers I know of, have been caught on lures. The beachfront and jetties around Cape May County are producing good numbers. The water temperature is moving into the 50’s in the back bays and the mid 40’s on the beach.

If you attend, stop by and say hello.
I will be talking fishing and hunting all day. I would be glad to answer any question about my recent articles including: the return of the weakfish, back bay summer flounder, striped bass, Jersey red drum and speckled trout. I will be located at the NJOA area, near the entrance. Hope to see you there.
