Kensdock flounder fishing report: Stay home

Here is June 2012 flounder fishing report, worst June  flounder fishing in my lifetime….  My Son and I did have one limit day, on Memorial weekend. At this point, most fishermen are catching zero keeper flounder and maybe two shorts after an entire day of flounder fishing.

Kensdock report: August Back Bay Flounder

Jonathon and Wayne traveled in from Louisville Ky., arriving last week. Back bay fishing for founder was on the top of the to do list. Usually they schedule a June Cape May County vacation, to catch the best of the Back  Bay flounder bite. However, this year Jon was  in Hollywood CA., busy with his part in the upcoming movie {Me Again} during June. He has a significant part in the movie, it is going to be a blockbuster, look for the trailers around the New Year. If you are Back Bay Flounder fishing in August, keeper flounder are much tougher to catch apposed to June fishing. The total amount of keeper flounder Jonathon and Wayne boated during their August vacation was 14 keepers to 23”, in addition, they had numerous short flounder. We fished an average of two hours, centered on the top of the tide, five trips. The water temperature fluctuated during the week between 63 degrees to a high of 76 degrees. The water clarity was excellent {tropical} I could see my lure on the bottom, from the boat at 19’.  I will be keeping a snorkel onboard for the rest of the summer to take advantage of the super clear water.  I should mention that every flounder trip this week included keeper flounder, not bad for August back bay fishing.

Kensdock report:Back bay Flounder update

I was able to flounder fish for  2 hours today. The round trip to my fishing spot was 35 minutes. Even with the boat traffic it was  beautiful on the water today. It was slow fishing but I did manage to catch 3 keeper flounder. There was one down side today and that was the greenheads. The water temperature was 64 at the top of the tide. The water clarity was an 8, with 10 being the clearest.

I fish for whatever flounder are located in the back bay.
If you are looking to fill the cooler with keeper flounder the upper Delaware bay is red hot at this time.

Kensdock Report: Flounder fishing update

We headed out flounder fishing in the back bay about 2:00 yesterday we fished until  4:30. The flounder fishing was very slow. I managed only one keeper flounder. The flounder are simple not here in any numbers {yet}?. There is still a remote chance that more keepers will move in. I have 16 keeper flounder for the 2010 flounder season to date, the lowest number of keepers to date in 10 years.  Wally B., Dr. Gary, Terry H., are a few Cape May County flounder fishermen that average over a hundred keeper flounder  a year. They are all off to a slow start this year,as far as keeper flounder are concerned. This  upcoming  week has  been traditionaly {for me} the best week for flounder fishing in the back bay waters. The water temperature yesterday was 71 degrees at high tide. Water clarity was poor.

Kensdock report 2-8-10 {Feb.2 ASMFC weakfish board meeting}

———–More indecision by the Asmfc weakfish board——–
The weakfish are in the most depleted condition in history with the real possibility of extinction!  98% of the letters received were pleading for a moratorium for weakfish. The data clearly indicated a moratorium would offer the best chance for recovery. Yet, the weakfish board made one more bad decision,in allowing 100 pound by catch per trip” for ever commercial net on the east coast and to allow recreational fishermen to kill the last of the breeders. obviously, this decision was made in complete disregard to the majority and the science. It is time for some new council members!
Tom Fote quote—–
How do you keep an industry going?
You know, we also talk about we’re supposed to
build a sustainable fishery for a sustainable industry.
If you start closing down both those industries, it
takes a long time for that industry to recover. end——-

I think this stock is in such a state that you need to
tell the public that it’s in real trouble. It’s near
collapse.
Even with a moratorium, it won’t recover in 20 years.

Your goal should be to maintain as much SSB as

possible in order to allow a quicker recovery

whenever the conditions allow it to recover. The

good news is this is not a red snapper or a goliath

grouper. It doesn’t have a 40-year recovery time. It

can recover in two or three or four years, so we’re not

looking at a long moratorium. I think that this is a

time when this commission needs to stand up and say

this fishery is real trouble and we need to stop fishing

for them. It’s pretty much that simple. Thank you.

Quote——-                   MR. MARK GIBSON     ——————quote:

Even if that’s all I got, it’s better to

have twice as much than zero and put the stock

precariously close to extinction as far as I can see

from this. I think the peer review panel said much

the same thing, that F is still a limiting – is

exacerbating the problem and it’s unsustainable.

That’s what you have to manage. A lot of managers

don’t like to accept the fact that what you have to

manage is F and that sometimes sustainable Fs

declines with externalities that happen to fish stocks.

It’s a lot like the serenity prayer if you’re familiar

with it. You know, you have the wisdom to know the

difference between the things you can change and

those that you can’t and have the courage to change

the ones you do. I think that’s what we’re faced with

here.

I’m all for conservation and there is a big problem with several fisheries, but I just don’t trust him.

If CaptTB or some of the other guys started a similar post… Ok. But not from Kensdock…

GoNavy, Obviously you do not know me. Nothing could be further from the truth! I have caught more fish and killed more deer legally under fair chase than most people on the planet! I spent enough time to catch over one hundred keeper flounder last season and catch one of three specs caught in Cape may co.. I have won a few and participated in many fishing tournaments both big game and back bay tournaments like lucky bones flounder. My family has been involved in hunting , commercial fishing, recreational fishing for 5 generations in Cape May co. NJ and continue to be avidly involved today. I am long time personal friends to some of the biggest players in the commercial fishing industry today.Due to my back ground I am able to post information that some people do not want posted on this site and others. I am all for utilizing our natural recourse via harvesting sustainable numbers of fish and game. I am not for abusing our natural resources via over harvest and repeating the same mistakes of the past. I look forward to meeting with Governor elect Chris Christie’s staff to discuss the benefits of a saltwater license. I do not get a dime for writing these post or lobbing our legislators. I do it because I love to catch fish and I know exactly what most be done to dramatically improve our saltwater fishing in New Jersey.

11-11-09 Kensdock fishing report

Stripers have been caught from the beach the last couple of days. The stripers were in the 20-28 pound class. All the stripers I know of have been caught on live bunker or fresh clam. The bass have not made a showing on the beach in great numbers, yet.The Delaware bay bite is red hot! Everybody I know that is fishing the bay from the rips in Cape May to the Maurice River has limited out with cow stripers many over 45 pounds. The inshore tog bite around Cape May has been good. Sea bass fishing has been excellent for the few captains that know were to fish in State waters. As you know federal waters are closed to sea bass fishing until spring. Anytime you are going to pay to go fishing make sure the captain has a reputation for catching  fish. When a guy passes a  captains course by no means does that make him a fishermen, let a lone a good one. I have spent many hours spec fishing this year in Cape May co. NJ and I only have one spec for my effort.  The dredging operation along our beaches maybe the reason for the lack of specs this year in our waters. The water temperature is 57.9.

Weakfish hearing

back bayI attended the ASMFC weakfish hearing in Toms River last night. The asmfc offered 4 options. You can view them all at the asmfc site. The only option that offers a real chance for the weakfish to recover is option 4 Harvest moratorium. The commercial fishermen’s rep was fine with  option 4 moratorium. Mostly all the recreational fishermen that voiced their own opinion demanded option 4. I do not know how many members the RFA has I do know they lost at lest eight members last night. They did not support a moratorium! If you would like give the weakfish a real chance of recovery  support option 4 harvest moratorium. You have until October 31 to make a comment.  Send your comments nmeserve@asmfc.org

 Here is quote from

And, finally, I would just like to say, as I said before,

no matter what happens with the peer review in June

the board needs to remember that weakfish is in a

depleted condition, a depressed state. We can’t agree

with that particular panel on why it is there. One of

the main things that they said was that predation may

be maintaining the population at low levels without

having contributed to the original decline in the

stock.

We agree that overfishing was the problem in the

eighties. We have used management to get the stock

started back in an increasing mode during the early

nineties and mid-nineties, and then all of a sudden it

dropped back down. Now, we definitely agree that it

was overfishing early on. We’re saying the split

happened in the early thousands that predation is the

main focus of a problem out

out there, and it is

continuing to maintain those levels and we can’t

seem to break through it to move forward. That’s it

for me. Like I said, I tried to do this real quick.

I was in contact with Nichola Meserve Fisheries Management plan coordinator today via email. She informed me that in light of the dramatic weakfish stock decline the ASMFC weakfish board initiated an addendum. The draft addendum will include  a range of options to severely  restrict the harvest of weakfish, including a moratorium on harvesting weakfish. The addendum is being fast tracked and could be approved in November.
